My Adult Opinion

I remember going to my first schooldance with my boyfriend. I was only 15 and we had only been dating for a couple of weeks, we were both pretty shy, things were a bit different in those days. We hadn't really told anybody that we were going out together except for my best friend Anne. We decided to just go to the dance and suffer the consequences of his mates, and I knew that some of my friends would be jealous because he was a very popular boy. Only a few days before the dance a very pretty girl called Sally was saying how she fully expected my boyfriend, Mark, to ask her to the dance, and I didn't have the heart to tell her that he was going with me. 'I absolutely adore him', she was saying, 'and I just know he feels the same way about me, I wouldn't be surprised if we started dating at the dance, just watch us'. I think that my friend Anne must have put her a little in the picture, because she turned up at the dance with another boy and told everyone that they had been secretly dating for months, I just knew that she was trying to save face but was quite glad that there wouldn't be any confrontation.

I arrived at the dance with my friend Anne, and had arranged to meet Mark there. I stood nervously in the hall looking around for him, we were a little bit late so I was sure that he would be there somewhere. Eventually he saw me and came over, evidently he'd been a bit worried that I wouldn't show up for some reason, we were both very new at this dating business. The dance was great (well, as good as a school disco ever can be). We all felt very grown up, and the teachers treated us a bit differently than they did in lessons, even dancing around with some of my friends. All in all, we had a really good time. I continued to go out with Mark for a few weeks after the dance, but once school broke up we kind of lost touch through the summer, well, we lived quitea long way apart and it was difficult to get together. When school restarted in September I was quite surprised to hear that he was dating Sally, they had got together in the holidays. Never mind.
